The topic of my Professional Learning Circle for my EDUC 4350 class was Assessment (Revisited). This blog post will provide a brief summary as well as my thoughts.
We started with a KWL (Knowledge, Wonder, Learn) chart to check in with the class as this was the second PLC about Assessment. We wanted to know what our classmates remembered about assessment. Next, we recapped what assessment is and the different types. We looked at the assessment framework and we talked about what it looks like in practice. After that, we looked specifically at assessment FOR and AS. Next, we went over learning skills and work habits: responsibility, organization, independent work, collaboration, initiative, and self-regulation. Penultimately, we looked at the 7 Fundamental Principles. Finally, we finished our KWL chart (the Learn section) to see what our classmates had learned from our presentation.
Through this PLC we discussed how it is important for teachers to model a love of learning in their classroom. A quote I feel is important is: “Teachers create environments in which all students feel valued and confident and have the courage to take risks and make mistakes,” (Government of Ontario, Pg.14). Teachers need to show their students they are important and capable of learning anything they put their minds to.
