Fall 2025
As I enter my second year of occasional teaching, I wanted to reflect on my teaching philosophy. I believe it is important to have a plan, but also be ready to be flexible and change it as needed. Classrooms are constantly fluctuating and changing and as the teacher you need to be ready to respond to these changes. Because of this, when planning lessons, it is crucial to think about things that may change when you implement the lesson, and that way you can prepare for how you might respond in the moment.
Winter 2023
Through this semester, I have been learning and growing my teaching philosophy. I will be adding onto and updating my Teaching Philosophy as I learn and grow in my journey as an educator. Teachers are at the core, role models and guides for their students. I have had many influential teachers in my life who have shaped me and guided me to become who I am today. I aim to create a classroom which is a brave space for my students. I have learned that it is not always possible to ensure a “safe space” and the best we can do is create a “brave space” where students are able to be themselves. I plan to create a culture of curiosity and exploration. I want to ensure students feel comfortable asking questions.
Fall 2022
Teachers should exemplify the best qualities and be role models for their students and others in the community. Teachers have the power to create the climate in their classrooms and are responsible for making a positive climate for students to learn in. One of the most important ways to create a positive environment is fostering healthy relationship building in the classroom. If the students know the teacher cares about their well-being and wants them to succeed, they will be more likely to. If the students have good relationships with each other, they are more likely to help someone in need. They will also feel more confident in the classroom, and not be shy about trying and possibly making mistakes.
As a teacher, I will be welcoming to all students and make sure they know I care about their learning. I aim to build a classroom environment where students are not afraid to try and take risks and where they know to fail is not a negative, but simply the first step in learning.
A few of the traits I feel are important in teachers and to encourage in students are:
- Kindness
- Courage
- Responsibility
- Integrity
- Compassion
- Respectfulness
- Generosity
- Perseverance
A few teaching strategies I will incorporate are inquiry-based learning, flexible seating, centres, and collaboration. I also want to incorporate universal design in my teaching, because if something is better for one student, likely it will benefit others as well.
